Ethernet connection problem CS548 (post by rhcarter)

Our apologies but ethernet is not yet implemented. It has been on our specification list as "to be implemented" for too long. We have been working on it for a while but there are still some issues that make it not ready to release. We will let everyone know when it is available.

Ethernet connection problem CS548 (post by HWDE)

Hello,
I can't get the Ethernet-connection to work. I pluged the CS1042 in the slot and connected to a Ethernet/USB adapter. Tried also with a cross-over cable. I also tried with DHCP and with fixed IP-adresses. But I am not sure if the IP shown in Aquirer-Window ist the right one.
I can not find any Link-LEDs on the back lighting up.
Is there a way to check whether the Cleverscope can even detect the CS1042?

Best regards

Vertical Scale for Small Signals (post by BMcG)

Just a minor oddity that I find a little annoying
At scales < 1mV the vertical scale starts to display in both mV & uV, rather than mV's & fractions of a mV
I just find this a bit confusing & think it would be better, less prone to confusion, if the scale retained the same units / div for the whole of the vertical scale
You don't see this confusion at the transition from V >mV, fractions of a V are used & there is a clean switch from fractions of a Volt to mV

Channel Alignment (post by BMcG)

Thanks for the confirmation & workarounds

Some other features of the issue I noticed
It does not matter which channel is set lower the miss-alignment will occur
The miss-alignment can be triggered at higher vertical scales i.e 2mV if the scope graph display vertical size is reduced

Channel Alignment (post by rhcarter)

It is not expected behaviour! Seems you have discovered a bug which we did not know about. We have been able to repeat it here, do not know why it is happening but have confirmed it is in the firmware and added it to our list of things to investigate.

The work-a-round is to leave the scope display on values - say 5mV - that do not cause the problem to appear and then drill in using the tracking graph as per the attached.

Alternatively, if you must work in the scope graph, you could set the Channel Time Alignment to compensate but that does have the risk of forgetting it is there.
Channel Alignment (post by BMcG)

Measuring the response of 2 photodiodes to high speed laser pulses of approx 30ns duration with a CS328A
The signal levels are quite low, of the order of a few too tens of mV

If I switch the amplitude magnification of a channel from 2mV/div to 1mV/div this introduces a miss-alignment between the timing of the pulses on channels A & B of the order of 200nS if the second channel is at a magnification >1mV

Is this change in timing expected behaviour when the amplitude magnification of a channel is changed?

CS548 Connection Instability on Windows 11 (post by bartschroder)

Hi Johannes,
We have had a few reports of this. However, we have not been able to reproduce it on 6 x Win 11 machines.
I have a couple of questions:
1. Are you using the USB cable we supplied with the CS548? Some customers swapped to our one, and the problem went away.
2. Are you powering the CS548 off a different power supply to the one we provided. If so, is there a continuous earth between the negative connection of the plug into the CS548 and the mains earth pin?
3. Are you able to send us your Windows 11 System Information summary page? Please email to support@cleverscope.com.

Are you from evs-inmotion?

let us know how you go.

CS448 Bricked After Firmware Update Attempt (post by bartschroder)

Hello Johannes,
Please send us an email, and we will send you an instruction on how to unbrick it. Email us at support@cleverscope.com.

To restore the scope you will need to reflash it. This is done with an Altera USB Blaster. If you don’t have one the fastest way is to buy one from Digikey:
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/terasic-inc/P0302/2003484
They are USD69.

CS448 Bricked After Firmware Update Attempt (post by JohJur)

Hi everyone,
we have a problem with our CS448 unit that seems to be bricked after attempting a firmware update. The update process did not complete successfully, and since then the device no longer starts up or appears in Cleverscope4. We’ve tried power?cycling and reconnecting it, but the scope does not show any signs of normal activity anymore.
Cleverscope4 also no longer detects the unit, so we cannot retry the firmware update or recover it through the software.
Any advice on how to revive the device would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

CS548 Connection Instability on Windows 11 (post by JohJur)

Hi everyone,
we’re having recurring connection issues with our CS548 units on Windows 11. Both Cleverscope4 and our Python scripts lose connection after a random number of acquisitions—sometimes after just a few, sometimes after several thousands(we use USB). Once the disconnect happens, the software locks up and we must restart (power?cycle) the CS548 to make it usable again.
We have tested two different CS548 devices on two separate Windows 11 PCs, and the issue occurs on all combinations. Firmware and Cleverscope4 are fully up to date. We did not see this behavior on Windows 10.
Has anyone experienced similar instability on Windows 11, or knows of any related driver/compatibility issues?
Thanks!

CS548 problems after firmware upgrade (post by bartschroder)

Unfortunately this is a tricky one. Our first ADC, made by Intersil, samples fine at 500 MSPS. However, it wants to do that with 3 serial lanes coming out. The data sheet did say operation with 2 lanes in packed form would also work, so that's what we went for. Most of the ADC we have tried (all the ones here for example), work just fine. But there are some that don't. It seems to be a problem of the transceiver.

We changed to an Analog Devices ADC just after Covid, and it has no problems working at 500 MSPS on two lanes (that is what it is designed to do).

We will revisit this to see if there is anything more we can do. But for the moment, the fallback is 76xx, as you have done. In your case, one of the ADC's is problematic, while 3 are fine. I agree this is annoying.

CS548 problems after firmware upgrade (post by dlw)

Hello,
I have got some problems after upgrading the firmware to 7769 / 7770:
* Channel A shows some random HF noise with 12V peak;
* Channel D is forcibly off (red LED) with values frozen and does not react to controls.
The behavior is the same with and without probes connected. Channels B and C seem to work normally.
Attaching a screenshot showing the noise on ChA and values stuck on ChD.
CS548 S/N JV10170, originally was 7648

Rolling back to 7669 solves the issue seemingly, but I am still looking forward to have 500 MSPS acquisition rate.

Digital display color (post by bartschroder)

CS328A-XSEi noise floor measurement (post by bartschroder)

Hi Daehee-kim,
thanks for the question. Unfortunately this is not a very good way to measure the noise floor. I attach a document 'CS328A Noise Floor', that describes what I found with the CS328A sitting on my shelf. I see some artifacts I had not expected, but they are small.

Answering your post:
1. It is not good to short the input with copper wire. This will make an antenna which will pick up all the local radio stations, which will alias into the displayed spectral frequency range. It is better to have the inputs open, or to short with a 50 Ohm BNC terminator. Open is easiest.
2. I don't see much point in sampling so slowly, for so long. First any higher frequency alias products will alias back into the displayed FFT. Secondly there is a better way! Use the built in Spectrum Analyser and use that to display the noise floor. The document shows how.

I hope this helps.
CS328A-XSEi noise floor measurement (post by daehee-kim)

I have two CS328A-XSEi units that I want to measure the noise floor of.
Using a copper wire, I shorted the BNC inputs of both channels.
The sampling rate was 20kHz and the measurement time was 5ks.

I have attached the power spectral density of the measurements, including the two units and the channels A and B.
As you can see, Cleverscope 2 shows a flat noise floor for both channels, whereas Cleverscope 1 shows a rising noise floor.
While I only attached one set of measurements, I have also observed a rising noise floor in Cleverscope 2.

Also, it would be great if you could comment on the origin of the harmonics observed in the noise peaks, as I am a beginner.

Thank you very much.

Blue Screening upon Connection (post by rhcarter)

Hi Erik,
That is not good and not something we have seen before. Can you tell me what version of windows and our application you are using? The ftdi driver is not used to connect to the CS448 so not clear why it is even involved.

Since it occurred after a power failure I would suggest first doing some disk management - first
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
followed by
sfc /scannow
and a restart

Even a chkdsk might be worth trying.

On my laptop I removed the ftdi drivers using an administrative terminal -
First find the driver package name -pnputil /enum-drivers
Look for ftdibus in the list — it will show an oemXX.inf name (e.g. oem151.inf). Then remove it using
pnputil /delete-driver oem151.inf /uninstall /force
The application connected to my CS448 fine without them.- - note that they are also used for Arduino boards etc as well.

There may be more than one of them.

Python should not be causing an issue but you will have had to re-install the drivers along with the application - however, not doing so would not cause a blue screen. When installing, do not click on the option to install the legacy driver for the CS328 - it is not required.

Let me know how you go. Once I have your software version I can do a bit more checking here on a test unit.

Regards,

Blue Screening upon Connection (post by ejporter)

Previously, we have been using the cleverscope software, as well as the python interface, which all worked great. Recently, whenever we try to choose/connect to an acquirer, the computer immediately blue screens and shuts down. We get error codes like ftdibus.sys file failed, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. I have opened the .dmp file produced from the crash and seen that it is caused by something in the cleverscope.exe but cant seem to hunt down the problem. I have fulling uninstalled the software and drivers, then reinstalled the multichannel install .zip file and rerun the setup file, but nothing changes. I am using a CS448 scope. are there additional drivers I need to reinstall upon re setup to make everything happy again, or perhaps something with my python dll was misconfigured or left connected during a recent power outage potentially causing issues (this outage was most likely the time when our issues began).

Is this a known issue? any advice or ideas?

CS548 - Maximum DC voltage for AC Measurement (post by Dejan)

Dear,

We have a task to measure the output voltage noise for our amplifier, which is built from two isolated blocks, each +-375VDC, and a total output of +-750VDC.

Of source we will use AC coupled method, but what is the maximum DC voltage during the AC measurement in the field about the Safe Operating Area of the scope?

CS548 - Markers (post by bartschroder)

Hi Dejan,
The markers are always there somewhere. If you don't want them visible move the graph left or right, place the markers and move the graph back. You can't delete or hide them.

cheers

CS548 - Markers (post by bartschroder)

Hi Dejan,
The simplest way is to place two markers on the peaks of the signal you want to measure, and then the frequency is the inverse of the time difference. You will see this displayed as Freq: in the Tracer and Marker area above the graph.

To place markers, click somewhere on the Display to make it active.
1. Move the tracer to the point you want to place Marker 1. The tracer is the little black blob on the Tracer channel. Click Tab to move to the next Tracer channel, or click somewhere in the name box in the Axis definition above the graph. That will move the tracer to that channel.
Click either the 1 numeric key, the space bar, or double click to make a Marker.

2. Move the tracer to the second point. The tracer can be on different channels if you want.
Click either the 2 numeric key, the space bar, or double click to make the second marker.

The Tracer, and Marker positions (amplitude, time) appear in the Tracer/Marker area. The Freq, dV and dt are displayed in the next column to the right.

If you want the signal information to only show information about the segment of signal from Marker 1 to Marker 2, click the 'Between M1-->M2 markers' option on.

If you want help on the Keyboard shortcuts, use Help/About Celeverscope.

I hope this helps, Bart.

CS548 - Markers (post by Dejan)

Hi, is there any possibility to measure manually with markers the frequency of some signal?
For example, we have some current ripple frequency that is hard to calculate/measure with a time base.
I see the option in the "Signal Information" tab, but how to set Markers M1 and M2?

Thanks,

Hello charlie,
the latest package for CS548 should be 5.05.34 or do you have a CS448 or CS328A?
To get rid of the security flag you can manually update the nimdnsNSP.dll and nimdnsResponder.dll to a newer version you can find at National Instruments.
Unfortunately, the new version with the bug fixes does not seem to be ready yet.

This issues still isnt fixed!! Tried to install 5.05.23 on a Windows 11 machine and same symptoms as reported in this thread - install via setup.exe freezes and has be killed via task manager. If you use the install windows installer pacakage it reports a missing cab file. Using progress.exe got the Cleverscope software in but no drivers. I then had to manually install the drivers via device manager and pointing it at directory with drivers and now working. It is a good job I still know my way around windows machines ...

CS548 - Signal Propagation Delay (post by Dejan)

Hi,
I'm currently using a Tektronix TCPA300 with a clamp TCP312A connected to your scope.

Do you have options in software for "Probe" to insert propagation delay, which is in this case 17ns, proposed in the datasheet?

Trigger on Time Out (post by bartschroder)

Hello AJ,
Yes you can easily trigger on a time out.
Check out our triggering video here:
https://cleverscope.com/videos/cs548-triggering/

On the Cscope Control panel click the Trig2 button in the Trigger area. Then click on the blue question mark to see the Triggering help. You will want to setup Trigger 1 to be something like Chan A, rising through 0V (or higher if you want to capture the start of the decay). On the Trigger 2 Setup panel click the Trigger 2 definition option. Then set the source to be the same channel you selected for Trigger 1, with the same level, with the same rising slope.

Now on the Trigger panel set Use to Trig 1~2 > max. Assuming a 60 Hz cycle (16.66ms), set the max to 20ms or more. Now capture Triggered. You should see no triggering until the Trigger condition is met, ie the second trigger is not triggering in 20ms.

If there is a lot of signal noise you might like to use a Trigger Filter. On the LHS of the Trigger panel choose a Filter of Low Pass or Noise.

Let me know if that helps.

Trigger on Time Out (post by AJHenry)

I am trying to get the scope to trigger or capture the signal when the signal goes away. I am troubleshooting an AC signal that dies randomly and does not come back. I want to capture the last AC cycle before this happens. On my Tek scope I could set a time out trigger, where the acquisition would happen if the trigger event did not happen in a certain amount of time. If I set this value just longer than the period of the signal in question I would be able to get a capture just over 1 cycle after the signal dies. Is this possible with the Cleverscope?
Thank you for your input.

CS548 - Signal Generator (post by bartschroder)

Hello Dejan,
Yes the maximum Vp-p is about 6.5V.
If you need more our CS1070 will deliver 32.5Vp-p.

If you set the impedance to 50 Ohm, the signal generator will double it's output to try and achieve the set Vp-p. For example with a 50 Ohm load, and you set the Sig Gen to 1Vp-p, it will actually output 2Vp-p. But it is limited by the maximum output. In addition any offset will also be limited by the absolute output range of about +3.25V to -3.25V.

If you connect a CS1070 power amp, and set the Use CS1070 to Use CS1070 50 Ohm, then the amplitude sets what comes out of the CS1070. The coax termination rules still apply.

This is pretty much what our System Spec says.
CS548 - Signal Generator (post by Dejan)

Hi,
While reading the datasheet of CS548, I couldn't find the maximum amplitude of the internal signal generator. From the software, we can set a 10Vpp voltage amplitude, but in the real case, it is ~6.534mV, at which point the amplitude starts to clip the output voltage.
We tried Termination(open, 75, 50, 25 Ohm), but nothing can help.

Additionally, software is listed last on your website (5.05.34).
Also, checked on the other scope, and the results are the same.
Do you have some advice for a Signal generator?

Solitary channel shows arbitrary volts/div loss (post by bartschroder)

Hi Pradgar,
Good you got it going. Re-installing is above and beyond.
Did you manage to click the Fit button on the Channel B axis? You will find the Fit button in the cluster of axis control buttons, 3rd button up, in your case the B channel axis controls are top right.

You can also save a file of a setup you like (File/Save As..) and then reopen it later to restablish the setup.

Solitary channel shows arbitrary volts/div loss (post by pradhar)

Hi,

I am using the CS548 with with the CS302 Multichannel Install (5.05.34) on Windows 11.

Channel B on the UI is continuously increasing, and I have lost control on the Volts/Div. Additionally, the volts/div settings are not appropriate. The other channels are okay.

Referring to another post (https://cleverscope.com/topics/523/after-some-time-scale-dev-is-increasing-automatically/), the .ini file is present, and the Tahoma font is installed.

Could you please recommend ways to fix this? Screenshots attached.

Sorry about the lack of reply, which should have been yes you can do that. I'm glad you worked it out.
We dod have a new improved FRA module coming along, which is faster, and achieves better SNR. I'll let you know when it is out.
